Questions moving company owners ask about marketing
Straight answers for movers on reviews, Google Ads, shared leads, websites, missed calls, the Google benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.
How many Google reviews does a moving company need?
More than the trucks you appear next to. Across 75,599 moving listings the median is 30 reviews and 47.2% have fewer than 25. In a real metro the companies holding the map pack are usually past 150, and the 75th percentile is 146. Because a move ends with an exhausted customer, timing matters more than volume: ask the day after, not at the truck. The scripts are in the reviews guide.
Why is my rating lower than other trades?
Because moving is the only home service where the customer watches every minute of the job and something they own can break. Across the dataset the mean rating is 4.4 stars and 18.6% of moving companies sit below 4.0. That is a wide bottom tier compared with most trades. It also means a genuine 4.7 with 200 reviews separates you from the field faster in this industry than in any other.
Are shared leads from moving.com or HomeAdvisor worth buying?
They work only if you win the race. Those platforms sell the same request to four or five movers, so the quote is decided by who calls first and who sounds least like a call center. If you buy them, treat a lead like a fire alarm: call inside 60 seconds, text if no answer, offer a video survey on the spot. If nobody in your office can do that, the money is better spent on your own Google presence. See the speed-to-lead guide and the do-it-yourself or hire it out guide.
Should I market local moves or long-distance?
They are two businesses with two funnels. Local moves are hourly, decided in a day or two, and won on availability and reviews. Long-distance is a bigger ticket with a two to six week research window, more quote shopping, and far more scam anxiety, which is why the interstate customer will check your USDOT number. Most owners should build the local machine first and add long-distance pages once the crews are booked.
Do customers really check my USDOT number?
Enough of them do that it is worth making easy. Interstate household goods movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and anyone can look up a carrier's authority, insurance and complaint history for free at the FMCSA's site. Putting your USDOT and MC numbers in the footer of every page, on your Google profile description, and in your quote email removes the biggest objection in the industry before the customer raises it.
What does a moving lead cost on Google Ads?
Roughly $30 to $80 per call for local moves in most metros and $60 to $200 for long-distance terms, which are among the most expensive keywords in home services. Movers lose money on Google Ads by running broad match on "moving companies" and paying for people researching a move eight weeks out with no address yet. Exact and phrase match on the job you want, tight radius, call tracking, and hours that match a live phone. Details in the Google Ads guide.
Do I need a website if I have a Google profile?
The data is blunt. Movers with a website carry a median of 58 reviews. Movers without one carry 1. 22.3% of moving companies list no site. The site is where the customer verifies you are licensed and insured, sees your trucks and crews, and gets an instant quote form. Skipping it in a trade with a trust problem is expensive.
Should I give a binding estimate?
Binding estimates cost you a little margin on the jobs you underquote and win you a large share of the jobs where the customer has been burned before. Non-binding is legal and normal, but it is also exactly what the horror stories are about. If you can do a video survey and quote a not-to-exceed price, say so in your ads. It is the single strongest differentiator available to a mover.
When should I ask for the review?
The next morning, not at the truck. At the end of a move the customer is tired, surrounded by boxes and thinking about where the bed goes. A text at 10 a.m. the following day, after the first night in the house, gets a longer and warmer review. One reminder 48 hours later, then stop.
Is the benchmark data trustworthy?
It is public listing data collected at scale, so it is good to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place ID and refreshed monthly. Google does not publish this itself. The full method is on the about page.
Where does the benchmark data come from?
Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for movers and moving and storage services in every state, 51 in total. We keep only public business fields, never reviewer names or personal details.
What is included in the free 14-day trial?
Any one of the services we run, or several: Google Ads management, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media management, review generation, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS campaigns, bookkeeping, and cold-call appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, stays yours.
What happens after 14 days?
You decide. Keep the service at the monthly price we quote before the trial begins, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is charged during the trial.
Do I need to give a credit card?
No. There is no card on file. We ask for access to the accounts involved and 20 minutes for a setup call. Most services are live within 48 hours; a website takes about a week to first draft.
