Read the median first, then ignore it

Half of all moving companies on Google have 30 reviews or fewer. If you are at 45 you are already ahead of most of the country, which is comforting and almost useless, because you do not compete with the country. You compete with the two or three companies Google shows above the fold in your metro, and those sit in the top tenth. The 90th percentile is 427 reviews. That is the number worth chasing.

The spread is extreme. 15.8% of moving companies have no reviews at all, 35.9% have fewer than 10, and 47.2% have fewer than 25. At the other end, 8.3% have passed 500 and 31.5% have passed 100. The mean of 174.7 is dragged up by van line agents and multi-branch operations, so it describes nobody. Use the percentiles: 3 at the 25th, 30 at the median, 146 at the 75th.

Ratings are the industry's real problem

The average rating across the dataset is 4.4 stars, and 63.7% of moving companies are at 4.5 or higher. Both of those look fine until you read the other end: 18.6% sit below 4.0. That bottom tier is unusually wide for a home service. It exists because moving is the only trade where the customer watches the entire job, where fatigue and damage are built into the work, and where a single scratched dresser turns into a one-star account of the whole day.

The practical read is not that you need a 5.0. 24.2% already show one, usually on a handful of reviews. It is that the floor matters more here than anywhere else. A mover at 3.9 is being filtered out by customers who have read the horror stories and are looking for a reason to eliminate you. A mover at 4.7 with 200 reviews looks like proof that the stories do not apply.

The website gap

22.3% of moving companies list no website on their Google profile. The ones with a site have a median of 58 reviews. The ones without have 1. We are not claiming the website produced the reviews. Serious companies do both. But in an industry with a trust deficit, the website is where a customer confirms your USDOT number, sees your own trucks and crews, and reads your damage and cancellation policy. There is no way to do that on a profile alone, and no long-distance customer books a stranger without it.

Hours, photos and the small stuff

96.2% of listings have at least one photo, so a profile with none puts you in the bottom few percent instantly. 29.6% list no hours, and 10.3% claim 24 hours. Moving demand is heavily weekend and end-of-month, yet only 51% list Saturday hours and 33.7% list Sunday. If you answer on a Saturday and your profile says closed, Google shows a red "Closed" to the person deciding right then. Only 23.1% publish an email, which matters more in moving than in most trades because a long-distance customer wants an inventory list and a written estimate before they will talk on the phone.

What to do with this

  1. Write down your own three numbers today: review count, star rating, and whether a website is linked on your profile. Place yourself against 30, 146 and 427.
  2. If you are in the 22.3% with no site, fix that before anything else. Five pages, tap-to-call, a quote form, license numbers in the footer.
  3. If your rating is under 4.0, stop all ad spend until it moves. You are paying to send people to a reason not to call you.
  4. Set a review cadence tied to the job, not to your memory: one text the morning after every completed move, one reminder at 48 hours. See the reviews guide.
  5. Correct your hours to match the phone you actually answer, including Saturday, and turn on missed-call text-back. The calculator shows what the unanswered ones cost at your average job value.
  6. Only then buy traffic. Ads pointed at a 12-review profile with no website fund your competitor's next quarter.

Method

This report aggregates 75,599 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for moving companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
